Lviv photographer passed away, his daughter and three granddaughters killed by a Russian missile strike.
Photographer Mykhailo Frantsuzov passed away in Lviv at the age of 68. His daughter Yevheniya Bazylevych and granddaughters - Yaryna (21 years old), Daryna (18 years old) and Emilia (7 years old), were killed as a result of a missile attack by Russia on September 4, 2024. This was reported by professor Bohdan Shumylovych from UCU on his Facebook page.
The farewell ceremony for Frantsuzov will take place on December 6 at 1:00 PM in the chapel at the hospital on Orlyk Street, 6. The cause of death is not disclosed.
According to Suspilne, Mykhailo Frantsuzov was born in Lviv in 1956 and studied the art of photography from his father Mykhailo Frantsuzov.
In the 1970s, he became an artist, entering a circle of like-minded individuals, including Andriy Sahaidakovskyi and Serhiy Bratkivskyi.
Together with colleagues, Frantsuzov founded the group of amateur photographers 'Vezha' which held exhibitions both in the USSR and abroad. Their work did not always adhere to the canons of socialist realism, which led to criticism of the group and personal sanctions against Frantsuzov, particularly after an attempt to send a 'too explicit' portrait of his father-in-law to Poland. The artist was summoned to a meeting of the Union of Architects and removed from leadership positions in the group.
Frantsuzov was part of the circle of Lviv nonconformists that formed around graphic artist Oleksandr Aksin. His photographs captured unique moments of Lviv and cultural life at the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s. His portraits feature prominent figures of the city from that Time, and his photographs became an important document of the era. However, a significant portion of his works was lost, as Frantsuzov himself did not consider them to be artistic.
