Lydia Stepanivna, 98, has died: walked 10 km from the occupied territory.
Brave grandmother who escaped from occupied territories has passed away
According to inkorr.com: Unfortunately, Lydia Stepanivna has left this world. Last April, at the age of 98, she walked over ten kilometers from the occupied Ocheretyne in the Donetsk region. This tragic event was reported by Igor Zinkevych, a deputy of the Lviv City Council.
“The grandmother who walked out from Ocheretyne has passed away. She was 98. In 2024, Lydia Stepanivna crossed about 10 kilometers of the front line just to be in the territory controlled by Ukraine,” Zinkevych wrote.
In April 2024, Lydia Stepanivna, along with her son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter, tried to escape to the territory controlled by Ukraine. Unfortunately, for unknown reasons, the family got separated. The grandmother walked for a whole day without food and water, repeatedly losing consciousness, as she confessed – “fell asleep.” To support her strength, the woman used two sticks.
Later, Lydia Stepanivna was issued a new passport, as her old documents were destroyed by the occupiers. In addition, the woman moved from an evacuation shelter to a new accommodation purchased for her by Monobank and its partners.
Lydia Stepanivna, who demonstrated incredible courage, left this world after all she had endured. Her journey over ten kilometers to the territory controlled by Ukraine will remain in the memory of many. Her bravery and love for freedom will be an example for others.
Unfortunately, the farewell to Lydia Stepanivna became a loss of extraordinary spirit, who fought for freedom and independence. Her story is a reminder of the resilience of Ukrainians in the face of challenges that have arisen in the conditions of war.
