Despite Tensions Over UPA, Tusk Pledges Steadfast Support to Ukraine.
Poland's Continuing Support for Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: Poland will maintain its backing for Ukraine despite diplomatic friction triggered by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision to grant the honorary title 'Heroes of the UPA' to a unit within Ukraine’s Defense Forces. Donald Tusk made this commitment during a meeting of the European Five in Berlin, assuring that Warsaw remains firmly on Kyiv’s side.
The disagreement between Ukraine and Poland arose from this contentious move, which has become a flashpoint in bilateral relations. Andrii Sybiha has voiced concerns over rising anti-Ukrainian sentiment in Poland, stressing the need to revitalize existing joint commissions rather than resorting to loud accusations.
Conference and Migration Issues
Amid these developments, a conference on Ukraine’s recovery is scheduled for June 25 in Gdańsk. The NATO summit, set to begin in Ankara in two weeks, may also serve as a critical platform for discussing European security matters.
Despite ongoing disagreements, Poland continues to host Ukrainian refugees and migrants. Over one million Ukrainian citizens have legally found employment in Poland, reflecting active cooperation between the two nations under challenging circumstances.
This situation underscores the complexity of Ukraine-Poland relations, where historical issues continue to shape contemporary politics. Despite the strain, Poland’s willingness to support Ukraine highlights the strategic importance of this partnership for both countries in the context of regional security.
