Odessa Law Enforcement Officer Accused of Stealing Deceased Persons' Apartments, Selling One for Over a Million.
Officer Suspected of Seizing Apartments from the Deceased
According to Novyny.live: An officer from the Odessa region is under investigation for allegedly seizing apartments belonging to deceased individuals who lived alone. According to the investigation, he sold one of these apartments for over 1 million hryvnias, while other transactions were halted. The suspect orchestrated a scheme to appropriate real estate that belonged to people without any heirs.
Investigators discovered that a 56-year-old resident of Chornomorsk took possession of a deceased woman's apartment, causing losses exceeding 1.1 million hryvnias to her rightful heir. The law enforcement officer was detained and formally notified of suspicion of large-scale fraud. Under current Ukrainian law, such crimes carry a potential penalty of up to 12 years in prison.
A Widespread Criminal Operation
This case exposes a broader criminal operation involving the illegal seizure of real estate belonging to deceased persons who have no heirs. The investigation is ongoing, and further details may emerge. This incident follows other criminal schemes uncovered in the Odessa region, including those related to the illegal departure of men abroad.
The discovery of this scheme points to potential systemic issues in managing the estates of the deceased and possible weaknesses in inheritance procedures. This situation underscores the critical need for enhanced oversight and transparency in the real estate sector, particularly for properties that risk being left without legal heirs. It may also prompt calls for legislative reforms to better protect the rights of heirs and the estates of the deceased.
