A €90 Billion Loan to Ukraine Is Being Blocked by a Pro-Russia Faction Inside the EU.
EU Loan for Ukraine Stalled: Latest Developments
According to TSN.ua: A coalition of pro-Russia member states within the European Union—led by Hungary and Slovakia—is currently obstructing a €90 billion loan package intended for Ukraine. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has openly aligned himself with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, signaling that his country may also veto the aid. This standoff has alarmed European leaders, as the loan is crucial to Ukraine’s financial stability.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stated that the EU will find legal avenues to disburse the loan, which is planned for the 2026–2028 period. She stressed that all conditions set in December 2025 have been met. However, she added:
'The loan remains blocked because one leader is not keeping his word. We will see this through one way or another, because our credibility and security are at stake.' Ursula von der Leyen
This deadlock highlights deepening divisions within the EU, where certain nations continue to hold pro-Russia stances. Viktor Orbán, backing Fico’s position, remarked:
'Zelenskyy cannot run the European Union. I will not be led around by the nose by Zelenskyy.' Viktor Orbán
These statements reflect growing friction between Ukraine and some EU members, who appear to prioritize political allegiances over the bloc’s collective interests.
The blockage threatens the vital support Ukraine receives from the EU and could hinder its economic recovery. The situation remains fluid, and the EU’s next moves will be closely watched both in Ukraine and internationally.
This crisis could have severe consequences for Ukraine, as EU financial aid is essential for its post-war rebuilding. The loan’s obstruction also underscores the political fractures within the European Union, which may test the bloc’s unity in supporting Ukraine. Observers are monitoring how other European nations respond, as the outcome could shape the future of EU-Ukraine cooperation.
