Former President of Austria condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine
Heinz Fischer, the former president of Austria, who hosted Vladimir Putin in Vienna in 2014, expresses condemnation of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He believes that Putin deceived everyone.
'Putin assured that he had no plans for any military actions. I spoke with an experienced Foreign Minister of Luxembourg, who was well-informed and said that we should not worry, that we did not believe this could happen. And Putin deceived us all and launched a military action that must be condemned,'- said Fischer, responding to a question from Ukrinform about his attitude towards Putin considering past relations.
Fischer also expressed the opinion that 'the annexation of Crimea was illegal and unacceptable.'
He also believes that the former leadership of Austria took the right position regarding the Russian Federation and Putin.
'Austria's position towards Putin was reasonable and dialogue-oriented,' noted Fischer.
He also mentioned that in the past he was interested in relations with Ukraine and even received the title of honorary doctor from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
