Russian leader Vladimir Putin during negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska announced his conditions for ending the war in Ukraine. He rejected the idea of a ceasefire and instead offers a comprehensive agreement. This was reported by Reuters.
Putin's conditions for ending the war
The Russian leader proposed the following conditions for stopping the war in Ukraine:
- withdraw Ukrainian troops from Donetsk and Luhansk regions;
- freeze the front lines in Kherson and Zaporizhia regions;
- temporarily abandon occupied territories in Sumy and Kharkiv regions;
- recognize Russia's sovereignty over Crimea;
- lift some sanctions against Russia;
- forbid Ukraine from joining NATO;
- provide Ukraine with security guarantees outside of NATO;
- officially define the Russian language in certain territories or throughout Ukraine;
- allow the Russian Orthodox Church to operate in Ukraine.
It is noted that Russian troops control certain areas of Sumy and Kharkiv regions, while Ukraine controls a significant territory of Donbas.
Putin informed Trump of his readiness to conditionally stop hostilities, but Ukraine did not agree to territorial concessions to Russia. Donald Trump confirmed that Putin rejected the idea of a ceasefire and wishes for an agreement to end the war.
