Ukraine calls for cutting off Russia's income from energy sales

Ukraine's representative to the UN, Serhiy Kyslytsya, emphasized the need to prohibit the Russian economy from profiting from oil and gas sales to stop financing military actions against Ukraine.

'Income from oil and gas sales is the main source for this. Therefore, it is very important to cut off these income streams by strengthening primary and secondary sanctions against the Russian economy,' Kyslytsya said at a UN Security Council meeting, as reported by Ukrinform.

In particular, the diplomat explained, it is necessary to increase sanctions pressure on Russian oil export capabilities. According to him, the shadow fleet of the Russian Federation consists of more than 600 ships that transport about 90% of Russian oil.

'The aging tanker fleet poses a serious threat to the environment and human health, as evidenced by the recent incident with two Russian tankers in the Kerch Strait,' Kyslytsya pointed out.

In his opinion, additional sanctions against the Russian Federation may include lowering the maximum price for Russian oil to $40 per barrel (currently capped at $60), sanctions against the captains of shadow fleet ships and companies that service them, enhancing control over tanker insurance, and restricting the passage of ships on the black list according to international port control memoranda.

Kyslytsya reminded that Russia's military budget for 2025 exceeds last year's by 25%. 'If we want to stop the war, we must cut off the money flows to Putin,' he stated. 'Putin will only start thinking about peace when his entourage tells him that the money has run out.'

In this context, the diplomat expressed his support for new sanctions being imposed by the USA, the United Kingdom, and the European Union against part of the shadow tanker fleet of the Russian Federation and companies that serve as 'Putin's personal purse.'
