Survey Reveals Record High Support for EU and NATO Membership in Ukraine.
Shifts in Ukrainian Attitudes Toward Euro-Atlantic Integration
According to Espreso.tv: A recent survey by the research project 'Joint Contours' has uncovered notable shifts in Ukrainian public opinion regarding Euro-Atlantic integration, with backing for joining the European Union (EU) and NATO reaching new peaks. Conducted via telephone interviews in March, April, and June 2026, the poll found that 64% of Ukrainians supported EU membership in April, a figure that climbed to 70% by June. Similarly, approval for NATO membership rose from 54% to 63% over the same period.
Despite these upward trends, a segment of the population remains skeptical about the feasibility of accession. Specifically, 9% of respondents opposed joining the EU, and 10% were against NATO membership. Additionally, 18% stated they would not participate in a referendum on EU entry, while 21% would skip a vote on NATO. Moreover, 3% of respondents were undecided on EU membership, and 6% lacked a clear stance on NATO.
Democracy Satisfaction and Political Engagement
The study also highlighted widespread dissatisfaction with the state of democracy in Ukraine. A total of 64% of respondents expressed discontent, whereas 33% were satisfied. More than half (53%) believe that fundamental rights, democracy, and the rule of law are insufficiently protected in the country.
Political discussions remain a key part of daily life for Ukrainians. According to the survey, 73% of respondents engage in conversations about national politics, 80% discuss local politics, and 59% talk about European political issues. Meanwhile, 56% of those polled are convinced that the United States is pressuring Kyiv to make concessions to Russia.
The research involved 3,200 participants aged 18 and older, with a maximum sampling error of 3.1%. These findings underscore that the push for Euro-Atlantic integration continues to resonate with many Ukrainians, even as challenges and skepticism persist.
The 'Joint Contours' survey results emphasize the centrality of Euro-Atlantic integration issues for Ukrainian society, which remains at the forefront of political discourse.
The growing support for EU and NATO membership reflects Ukrainians' desire to strengthen their country's position on the global stage. However, the concurrent skepticism and dissatisfaction with democratic governance suggest that addressing domestic issues is crucial for achieving these international goals. Ongoing political debates and active citizen engagement will be vital in shaping Ukraine's future strategy in this direction.
