Militarization of Russian Education

According to UATV: Russia is systematically militarizing its schoolchildren by instructing them in the operation of combat drones under military supervision. This initiative, reported on March 1, is part of a curriculum titled 'Fundamentals of Security and Homeland Defense.' In Kursk Oblast, drone piloting lessons have already commenced at one school, marking the rollout of this new educational program.

Authorities are attempting to disseminate this knowledge to a wider student audience, with over 600 schools in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast now equipped for assembling and operating drones. These actions raise concerns, as schools in Sievierodonetsk, formerly known as Severodonetsk, are being used as instruments to coerce loyalty. This development occurs against the backdrop of Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine and its focus on drone warfare.

The Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine stated that 'this mass, coordinated indoctrination of teenagers through the school curriculum clearly points to the Kremlin's strategy: to cultivate a new generation of combat drone operators prepared to participate in future wars.'

The Kremlin's Strategic Aims

This drive to militarize education may signal the Kremlin's strategic intent to shape a new generation ready for future military action. Amid ongoing armed conflicts and geopolitical tensions, such a program could form part of a broader strategy to bolster the nation's military capabilities. Educating youth in military technology could significantly impact society by fostering a new identity and loyalty to the state.
