Rutte: Russia has no veto right on Ukraine's NATO membership

According to ТСН: Russia has no veto rights or influence over Ukraine's accession to NATO, regardless of the terms of the so-called peace agreement that the US has passed on to Kyiv.

General Secretary of the Alliance Mark Rutte emphasized this position, stating that it rejects proposals from the US and Moscow regarding possible agreements that could block Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic prospects.

“Russia has neither a vote nor a veto right on NATO membership,” he stated in an interview with the Spanish El País and the German publication RND.

Rutte also pointed out that the Washington Treaty, on the basis of which the Alliance was created, explicitly allows accession for any state from the Euro-Atlantic region.

These comments from the General Secretary were a response to the recent US proposal for a ceasefire with Russia, which included a demand that NATO “will not accept Ukraine under any circumstances in the future.”

The General Secretary added that even if an agreement is reached with the Kremlin, the threat from Russia will remain.

“Russia will long remain a serious threat,” noted Mark Rutte.

It was previously reported that Rutte mentioned that several countries openly oppose Ukraine's NATO membership. He also emphasized that only clear and tough consequences for violating agreements can deter Putin.

Overall, NATO's position on Ukraine's membership remains steadfast, despite external pressure. This reflects the strategic course of the Alliance, which seeks to maintain stability in the region and considers the security of its members, regardless of pressure from Russia. The situation around NATO and Ukraine will remain in the focus of international news, as it concerns significant geopolitical changes in Europe.
