Russian Shelling Targets Kherson and Chornobaivka, Injuring Civilians and Damaging Cathedral.
Massive Attack Strikes Kherson
According to UATV: On February 8, the city of Kherson endured a massive bombardment by the Russian army, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to buildings. The shelling, which lasted into the morning, targeted the Central and Korabelnyi districts. Nine civilians were wounded in the initial attack, with two more women injured later in the morning. This assault is part of a pattern of strikes on the strategically vital southern Ukrainian region, which Russia illegally annexed in 2022 but never fully controlled.
Around 5:00 a.m., the nearby town of Chornobaivka also came under fire. More than 20 homes were damaged in this attack on a residential area, where approximately 20 shells were launched. The assault damaged not only private houses but also critical local infrastructure.
Severe Consequences of the Assaults
The attacks caused severe damage to the Holy Spirit Cathedral, a significant cultural and religious site. Shelling continued in Kherson, where a multi-story apartment building was also struck.
Residents of the affected areas shared their harrowing experiences. One woman, who was at home with her mother during the attack, reported:
“She is now lying in the hospital; her leg was badly cut by glass.”Another Kherson resident recounted:
“The firefighters were putting out a fire until 4 in the morning, rushing back and forth. I haven't slept a wink today.”
These events underscore the dire humanitarian situation in the region, where civilians continue to bear the brunt of military actions. Attacks on civilian infrastructure highlight the ongoing conflict's devastating impact on daily life in Kherson, where people face constant danger and require urgent assistance. The situation demands continued attention from the international community to ensure the protection of civilians and the restoration of damaged infrastructure.
