According to ТСН: Russia has expanded its military capabilities by introducing a new strike drone — the Shahed-107. This device is a simplified and more economical version of the well-known kamikaze drone Shahed-136, which is actively used in terrorist attacks on Ukrainian cities.

This information was disclosed by military analysts.

Features of the novelty

As noted by the drone expert from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), Fabian Hintz, Iran introduced this model only this year. The main difference between the Shahed-107 and its predecessor lies in its simplified design and the use of cheaper components.

In particular, engineers have significantly reduced the costs of the power plant:

  • Shahed-136 uses a Chinese copy of the German aviation engine Limbach.

  • Shahed-107 is equipped with an engine from the Chinese manufacturer DLE, which is a budget option.

Moreover, the new drone has fixed wings and a simplified aerodynamic scheme.

Combat characteristics and economy

The reduction in production costs has also affected the combat characteristics of the drone. If the Shahed-136 can carry a warhead weighing from 50 to 100 kg, then its 'younger brother' the Shahed-107 is equipped with a warhead weighing about 15 kilograms.

Although a single Shahed-107 has less destructive power, the danger lies in the potential mass use of it.

Experts believe that the emergence of the new drone is related to Moscow's intention to optimize costs for the war. The cost of one Shahed-136 is estimated at about 60,000 euros, making it a relatively expensive means of destruction. In contrast, the Shahed-107 is significantly lighter and cheaper to produce.

“The reasons for acquiring a relatively new drone are purely speculative, but the design gives hints. This could allow Russia to prevent a potential deficit,” concluded Fabian Hintz.

In addition, it is worth noting that Russian troops have begun to use strike drones Shahed-136 in a new modification with a dual warhead. According to experts, the total mass of the explosive charge reaches about 100 kg, significantly increasing the destructive power of drones and the threat to civilians, military personnel, and critical infrastructure facilities.
