Satellite Internet Reaches the Frontlines: A Potential Shift in Russian Military Tactics.
How Satellite Internet Could Alter Russian Military Operations
According to TSN.ua: Advisor to the Minister of Defense, Serhiy Beskrestnov, has confirmed that Russian troops are now receiving satellite internet terminals on the front lines. This development, involving several Russian high-speed satellite providers, could significantly impact their battlefield tactics. These providers utilize the 'Yamal' and 'Express' satellite series, enabling network connectivity even in active combat zones. The deployment of this technology follows the loss of access to the Starlink system, which had complicated command and control for Russian units.
The satellite antennas, which are always oriented southeast or south within an azimuth of 110-180°, measure between 60 and 120 cm in diameter and can be round or oval. Notably, they remain visually exposed without protective covers, potentially creating a security vulnerability. A terminal can be positioned deep behind the front, with connections to forward units maintained via Wi-Fi bridges. This setup allows for greater mobility and real-time coordination, which is critical in modern warfare.
Consequences of New Technological Implementation
The introduction of satellite internet for Russian forces could substantially alter tactical capabilities on the battlefield by providing rapid access to information and communications. This may improve operational coordination, a crucial factor in contemporary combat. However, the exposed nature of the antennas also presents a potential weakness, increasing security risks that an adversary could exploit. The overall effect may be a more connected but also more targetable force.
