Russia Tests NATO: How Estonia Prepares for Possible Invasion

According to ТСН: In September and October 2025, a series of incidents involving Russian military violations of NATO airspace — incursions into Estonia's borders, a brief penetration into Romanian airspace, and violations of Polish airspace — raised concerns in European capitals.

As noted in the report by the European Council on Foreign Relations, individual incidents can be seen as accidental or displays of strength. However, collectively they are interpreted as a test of NATO's resolve and an attempt by the Kremlin to determine whether the alliance's reaction has weakened after four years of war in Ukraine.

Situation in Estonia

For Estonia, a small but strategically important country on NATO's eastern flank, this threat is particularly relevant. The country borders Russia and Kaliningrad, making it vulnerable to artillery attacks from St. Petersburg. At the same time, Estonia is actively strengthening its defense capabilities, increasing its defense budget to 5% of GDP and investing over 10 billion euros in developing its armed forces by 2029. The strategy is based on three key elements: artillery advantage, air defense, and counter-drone defense, as well as mobilizing the population through the volunteer movement Kaitseliit.

Lessons from the War in Ukraine

The lessons Estonia has learned from the war in Ukraine show that defense is enhanced by modern technologies. Innovations such as FPV drones and precision munitions can significantly complicate the enemy's advance, even if their forces are superior. Russia, despite its experience and ambitions, currently lacks the resources for a successful invasion of Estonia. Political unity within NATO and support from allies remain critically important for deterring aggression.

Thus, Estonia is prepared for potential threats from Russia. Its strategic location makes the country an important symbol of Europe's collective defense. The lessons from Ukraine indicate that even small states can effectively counter more powerful aggressors by utilizing modern technologies, mobilizing the population, and having a well-thought-out defense strategy.

It should be noted that Russia has already openly threatened war against NATO countries. This statement was made by Andrei Belousov, the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation. According to him, the united NATO forces are allegedly preparing to confront Russia at the turn of the 2030s. Therefore, Russia will be fighting next year, “imposing its war on the opponent.”

Thus, recent events confirm the seriousness of the threat posed by Russian troops and the importance of readiness among NATO member states. Estonia, focusing its efforts on strengthening its defense capabilities, serves as an example for other countries in the region, demonstrating how to effectively respond to modern security challenges.
