Russia Launches Nighttime Barrage of Nearly 300 Drones and 50 Missiles on Ukraine.
Russia's Large-Scale Assault on Ukraine
According to UATV: In a major overnight offensive on February 22, 2023, Russian forces targeted Ukraine with a combined aerial assault, firing close to 300 attack drones alongside 50 missiles of various kinds. The attack struck multiple regions across the country, including:
- Kyiv
- Dnipropetrovsk Oblast
- Kirovohrad Oblast
- Mykolaiv Oblast
- Odesa Oblast
- Poltava Oblast
- Sumy Oblast
The human toll of the bombardment was severe. In the Fastiv district of Kyiv Oblast, one man was killed and eight people, including a child, sustained injuries. This attack is part of a broader pattern of Russian strikes targeting civilian areas and critical national infrastructure.
Infrastructure Damage and Official Response
Beyond the casualties, the strikes inflicted significant damage to infrastructure. In Odesa Oblast, Russian forces deliberately targeted energy facilities, triggering large-scale fires and causing serious destruction. This barrage followed an intense week of prior attacks, during which Russia had already launched over 1,300 attack drones, more than 1,400 guided aerial bombs, and 96 missiles of various types.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the situation, stating that
“the primary aim of the strike was the energy sector, but ordinary residential buildings were also hit, and there is damage to railway infrastructure”. He further remarked that
“Moscow continues to invest more in strikes than in diplomacy”, and stressed the urgent need to bolster air defenses: “We must strengthen our air defense.”
This assault is a continuation of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began with Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, and marks a further escalation of military aggression by Russian forces. In modern warfare, attacks on critical infrastructure like the energy grid are designed not only to achieve military objectives but also to exert psychological pressure on the civilian population. The Ukrainian government's response underscores the critical importance of enhancing the country's defensive capabilities and securing sustained international support to counter the aggression. The discussion around strengthening air defense systems has become increasingly urgent in the face of these evolving threats.
