Russia Demands Ukrainian Troop Withdrawal from Donbas Within Two Months.
Russia's Ultimatum to Ukraine
According to UATV: Moscow has issued a two-month deadline for Kyiv to pull its forces out of the Donbas region, warning of an expanded offensive if the demand is not met. The ultimatum was relayed through American intermediaries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky contends that the Kremlin's actual ambitions stretch well beyond Donbas, and that any territorial concessions could trigger a fresh cycle of escalation.
The Kremlin has stated it will seize the Donbas if Ukraine refuses to comply. Zelensky noted that
“today Russia is putting pressure on the United States because the midterm elections, as they are called in America, are approaching”. Meanwhile, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized that
“a ceasefire achieved at the cost of territories would lead not to peace, but to new crimes and escalation”.
Expert Assessment of the Situation
Analysts stress that the presence of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Donbas is essential for any chance at lasting peace. Artem Bronzhukov also underlined that 'the Donbas is not a bargaining chip.' It is worth noting that between January 1 and March 26, 2026, the Russian army suffered 89,000 soldier casualties.
The situation remains tense, and how events unfold will depend on Ukraine's response to the Kremlin's ultimatum as well as the actions of international partners.
This ultimatum underscores the growing strain in the region and the critical need for diplomatic efforts to prevent further conflict escalation. Kyiv's reply to these demands, along with the reaction of global allies, could significantly shape regional stability. The challenges facing Ukraine call for a measured approach to avoid additional casualties and preserve the country's territorial integrity.
