Escalating Drone Warfare

According to TSN.ua: Russia has intensified its campaign of strikes against Ukraine using upgraded 'Geran' drones, developing new versions with greater speed. Since the start of 2022, Russia has deployed these Iranian-designed drones, which have undergone significant modifications. Enhancements now include satellite navigation protection systems, cameras, and elements of artificial intelligence. However, the drones' effectiveness has diminished following the deployment of Ukrainian interceptor drones, which have achieved a shoot-down rate exceeding 60%.

New Drone Modifications Emerge

A new variant, the 'Geran-3', entered service in 2025 and is capable of speeds over 500 km/h. Another modification, the 'Geran-5' drone, was first observed in early 2026. It features a wingspan of approximately 5.5 meters and can carry up to 90 kg of explosives. These new capabilities underscore Russia's intent to refine its aerial weaponry for sustained attacks.

In a related development, Russia also employed a modified Kh-101 cruise missile, known as 'Izdeliye-30', in a mass strike on Ukraine on March 7. The past week has seen an unprecedented number of attacks, highlighting a sharp escalation in hostilities. This sustained aerial assault represents a significant challenge for Ukrainian air defenses, which have adapted but face constant technological pressure.

Serhiy Beskrestnov ('Flash') noted that 'Russia could add evasive maneuvers, very low-altitude flight, or increase speed,' factors which could impact the future effectiveness of the drones.

This escalation in drone and missile use indicates Russia's attempt to maintain its offensive tempo despite the reduced effectiveness of earlier models. Specifically, the drone upgrades suggest an intent to improve Russia's capabilities within the aerial domain, which could negatively impact the situation on the ground in Ukraine. The situation is likely to remain tense as both sides continue to refine their military technologies within the protracted conflict.
