Russian Strikes Hit Odesa and Zaporizhzhia, Causing Deaths and Destruction.
Attacks Target Ukrainian Cities
According to UATV: On February 13, 2023, Russian military forces launched attacks against Ukrainian population centers, including the city of Odesa and the Zaporizhzhia region. These assaults resulted in civilian casualties and significant damage to infrastructure. In Odesa, a drone struck the upper floors of an apartment building, damaging a residential unit. The attack left six people injured and one person dead.
In the Zaporizhzhia region, shelling killed one individual and wounded another. Across the region, a total of 559 strikes hit 37 separate towns and villages. These attacks generated 51 separate reports of damage to homes, vehicles, and critical infrastructure. As noted by Serhii Lysak,
“damage was inflicted on energy, port, residential, and industrial infrastructure.”
The strikes also triggered major fires, including one at a car dealership, according to Ukraine's State Emergency Service. These events underscore the ongoing severity of the conflict in Ukraine, where civilians continue to bear the brunt of the violence. The war, now in its second year, has seen a pattern of attacks on urban areas far from the front lines.
An Ongoing Conflict and Its Consequences
These latest attacks occurred against the backdrop of a protracted conflict between Ukraine and Russia that began in 2014. They signal a continued escalation of violence that directly impacts the lives of non-combatants. The widespread damage to civilian infrastructure and the resulting human losses highlight the urgent need for sustained international support and enhanced security measures to protect Ukraine's civilian population.
