Massive Drone Assault on Ukraine

According to UATV: In a major overnight attack on March 4, Russian forces launched approximately 150 attack drones against Ukraine. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted and destroyed 129 of the hostile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This large-scale assault is part of Russia's ongoing campaign to target Ukrainian infrastructure and cities, often under the cover of darkness. Preliminary reports as of 08:30 indicate that downed drones, including models identified as 'Shahed,' 'Gerbera,' and 'Italmas,' were recorded in the northern, southern, and eastern regions of the country.

Launch Sites for the Drone Attack

The drone launches originated from several locations:

  • Bryansk
  • Kursk
  • Millerovo
  • Primorsko-Akhtarsk (Russian Federation)
  • Hvardiiske (temporarily occupied Crimea)

This attack follows a pattern of increasing drone warfare. Notably, in February, Ukrainian defense forces demonstrated significant capability by shooting down over 70% of 'Shahed'-type drones over Kyiv and the surrounding region. As stated by Commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi,

'In February, interceptor drones of the Ukrainian Defense Forces shot down more than 70% of Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over Kyiv and the region.'

According to initial data, strikes from 19 combat UAVs were recorded at 15 different locations. The situation remains tense, with Ukrainian forces continuing active operations to maintain air defense coverage across the country.

The persistent drone assaults underscore the continuous threat posed by Russia, which employs these relatively low-cost systems to probe and overwhelm air defenses. While Ukraine's air defense has shown improving effectiveness in countering these threats, the relentless nature of the attacks highlights the ongoing need for enhanced defensive capabilities and international support to protect Ukrainian airspace.
