Zaporizhzhia Comes Under Attack

According to UATV: On February 1, 2023, Russian drone attacks on the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia wounded nine people. The strikes targeted residential areas, with one drone directly hitting a maternity hospital. The assault caused severe damage, destroying 15 apartment buildings and two private houses. This attack is part of a wider pattern of strikes on civilian infrastructure that has characterized the war in Ukraine.

Among the injured were medical staff and patients at a dental clinic, who were wounded during a follow-up attack. Two women and a four-year-old boy were also hurt in the incident. Fortunately, the maternity hospital staff, along with mothers and their newborns, were sheltering in an underground bunker at the time and escaped injury.

Eyewitness Accounts

Residents described the force of the explosions:

'There was a powerful explosion. Windows were blown out somewhere over there,' noted Maria.
Another local resident, Volodymyr Borysovych, added that 'a huge number of windows, about 100, were shattered. Several people were cut by flying glass shards.'

According to medical officials, the injured women declined hospitalization. 'They said they would go home. The children are in good condition, so they can be discharged,' reported Olha Vashchenko.

The attack has heightened anxiety among Zaporizhzhia's residents and underscores the ongoing aggression from Russian forces. The situation in the city is compounded by the persistent threat of new strikes, which continue to endanger civilian lives. The strike on Zaporizhzhia reflects an intensification of hostilities in Ukraine, with the increasing bombardment of peaceful residential areas signaling a dangerous escalation of the conflict. The city remains at risk, forcing its inhabitants to adapt to the harsh realities of war while struggling to preserve their lives and well-being.
