Why Ukraine's International Legion Was Disbanded and Its Fighters Moved to Assault Regiments.
What We Know About the Legion's Disbandment
According to Novyny.live: In early 2025, Ukraine dissolved the International Legion, a unit formed in February 2022 that had become a vital part of the nation's defense. The decision to transfer its foreign volunteers into assault regiments came as a shock to many within the military. The International Legion was a unique formation, drawing volunteers from dozens of countries who traveled to Ukraine to fight following the full-scale invasion.
Legionnaires learned of their reassignment to the 253rd Assault Regiment of the 129th Territorial Defense Brigade on November 1, 2025. This move was accompanied by information that the Legion's 2nd Battalion received a temporary reprieve, allowing it to remain intact until February 15, 2026. Military expert Andriy Spivak views the decision as a significant loss, stating that
"the disbandment of the legion means losing a unique resource."
The termination of the International Legion's operations has sparked debate among military analysts and experts, given the organization's important role in supporting Ukraine's defensive capabilities. Foreign volunteers will now continue their service within these new units, a shift that could influence military strategy and tactics on the front lines.
This disbandment signals a change in Ukraine's approach to forming military units, likely as an adaptation to evolving battlefield conditions. The integration of foreign volunteers into assault regiments may also reflect a need to more formally incorporate the legionnaires' experience and skills into a structured military system that meets the modern demands of the front.
