Drone Incident in Galați
According to Espreso.tv: On May 28, 2026, an incident involving a Russian-made Geran-2 drone occurred in the city of Galați, Romania. The drone crashed onto the roof of an apartment building, injuring two people and causing material damage. Romanian President Nicușor Dan confirmed that fragments recovered from the crash site indeed originated from a Geran-2 drone.
President Dan stated that 'the fact that such a device struck an apartment building in Romania, causing injuries and material damage, is of particular seriousness, and full responsibility for this lies with Russia.'
This event triggered significant concern among Romanian authorities. In response, the country declared Russia's Consul General in Constanța persona non grata.
International Reaction
As a NATO and EU member, Romania intends to share the findings of its investigation into the incident with these international organizations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that 'Kyiv is ready to support Bucharest in this situation in any way necessary.' This underscores the importance of cooperation between Ukraine and Romania amid heightened regional tensions.
The Galați incident serves as further evidence of the threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles in the current geopolitical landscape, prompting deeper examination of security concerns in the region. This event highlights growing anxiety over safety in Eastern Europe, as drone usage can endanger not only military targets but also civilian populations. Romania, as a NATO member, is entitled to collective defense, and this case could lead to strengthened military collaboration among alliance members. Cooperation with Ukraine also demonstrates regional unity in countering external threats.
