Romania Expels Russian Ambassador After Drone Strike Hits Residential Building.
Incident in Galati
According to UATV: On the night of May 29, a Russian drone crashed into a residential building in Galati, Romania, injuring two people and prompting the evacuation of around 70 residents. This event is part of a troubling pattern: since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, Romanian authorities have recovered 47 fragments of Russian drones on their soil.
In response, Romania shut down Russia’s consulate general in Constanta and declared the Russian ambassador persona non grata. The drone had entered Romanian airspace during an attack on Ukraine, prompting the launch of two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter to intercept it.
Romanian Authorities React
Nicușor Dan, a Romanian official, stated:
“Full responsibility for this incident lies with Russia—a country that has been waging an aggressive war against Ukraine for more than four years.”He also noted that 'bilateral agreements, as well as NATO arrangements with partners, govern the deployment of such equipment in Romania.' The situation has raised regional concerns and underscores the tensions fueled by the ongoing conflict.
The Galati incident serves as a stark warning about the risks stemming from military operations in Ukraine. Romania’s response—closing the consulate and expelling the Russian ambassador—reflects growing anxiety over national security and territorial integrity. Repeated breaches of Romanian airspace by Russian drones could further escalate regional tensions, demanding heightened attention from the international community.
