Ukraine's Goal for Russian Forces

According to UATV: Ukraine is working to apply heavy pressure on Russian troop positions, aiming to compel Moscow into ceasefire negotiations before autumn 2023. This objective was outlined by military analyst Oleksandr Musiyenko during a broadcast on the FREEДOM TV channel. He stated that Ukrainian officials hope talks could begin by the end of the fall season in 2023.

Strategy to Pressure Russia

Musiyenko stressed the importance of creating what he called 'fire pressure' on Russian forces—targeting both frontline positions and logistics networks in occupied territories, as well as inside Russia itself.

“Our task is to ensure that by autumn, we apply such fire pressure on Russian troop positions—both on the front line and on logistics in occupied territories and within Russia—that by November, for instance, they would be ready to sit down at the negotiating table,” the expert explained.

To make this strategy work, Musiyenko said Ukraine must not only ramp up its own strikes but also rely on continued European support. He emphasized that Europe needs to:

  • increase arms deliveries to Ukraine;
  • expand joint weapons production with Ukraine;
  • tighten sanctions pressure from both the United States and Europe.

Even under such a scenario, Ukraine plans to endure the winter months while maintaining pressure on Russia. “Ukraine intends to get through the winter, keep up the pressure on Russia, and enter negotiations from a position of strength, with terms that are far more favorable to itself,” the analyst noted.

As a result, Kyiv is preparing for possible shifts in the situation that could emerge from continued combat operations and diplomatic efforts.

Ukraine's strategy of pressuring Russia until fall 2023 reflects its desire for a peaceful resolution to the conflict—but only under conditions that serve its own interests. The critical role of international backing, especially from Europe and the United States, underscores how closely military and diplomatic efforts are intertwined. This dynamic could significantly shape developments in the region, particularly as the military and political landscape evolves in the coming months.
