Trump and Putin Meeting in Jeopardy: US Cancels Summit Over Russia.
According to inkorr.com: The planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin is now at risk of collapse. The main reason is Moscow's refusal to agree to an urgent ceasefire in Ukraine. This was reported by Reuters, citing high-ranking officials in the White House.
Washington Has Refused Trump’s Meeting with Putin
In Washington, it was noted that there are currently 'no plans for a face-to-face meeting' between the leaders of both countries. Although the conversation between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was 'productive', the parties decided to refuse in-person negotiations. Last week, Trump announced a summit in Budapest, hoping to achieve peace, however, the Kremlin insists that Ukraine must first cede territory.
As a result, preparations for the . Lavrov stated that 'the time and place of the summit do not matter, it is important to fulfill the previous agreements reached in the talks in Alaska'. The Kremlin also reported that a new date for the meeting has not yet been set, and 'serious preparation may take some time.'
The Russians Wanted Too Much
EU diplomats believe that the disruption of preparations for the summit indicates that the US is not willing to continue negotiations if Russia does not make concessions.
‘It seems the Russians wanted too much, and it became clear that Trump will have nothing to sign in Budapest,’ noted one European representative.
Another diplomat emphasized that Moscow 'has not changed its position and does not agree to stop hostilities on the current lines.'
Leaders of the EU, including those from Britain, France, Germany, and the European Union, expressed support for Trump’s position regarding the ceasefire. In a joint statement, they emphasized that 'the hostilities must cease immediately, and the current front line must serve as the basis for future negotiations.'
At the same time, EU leaders are preparing to host Zelensky at this week’s summit, where the creation of an international security mission to ensure peace after the war is expected to be discussed — a proposal that Moscow categorically rejects.
It should be noted that earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban expressed support for the planned meeting between the US and Russian presidents.
The likely collapse of negotiations indicates the complexity of the situation in Ukraine and the necessity for further diplomatic efforts. The mutual demands of the parties remain low, and their positions still do not coincide. The meeting of the leaders could be an important step towards establishing peace, however, without concessions from Russia, progress seems unlikely.
