Turkey handed over to Russia the lists of missing Ukrainian prisoners of war: details.
According to ТСН: Turkey handed over to Russia the lists of Ukrainian prisoners of war who are missing and severely wounded.
Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets shared this information after a meeting with his Turkish colleague Mehmet Akardja and the coordinators of the families of Ukraine's defenders. Lubinets received confirmation from the Chief Ombudsman of Turkey that the lists of the missing, as well as those seriously ill and severely wounded prisoners of war, provided by Ukrainian families during a meeting in Turkey, were handed over to Russia.
Additional efforts for interaction
“We agreed to establish a permanent communication channel between our institutions. I suggested organizing the transfer of letters from families through Mehmet Akardja to the Russian side for Ukrainian prisoners of war with the possibility of mandatory responses,”
— noted the authorized representative of the Verkhovna Rada for human rights.
Lubinets also promised that the Ukrainian side would prepare and hand over new lists to Turkey:
missing under special circumstances — for verification;
seriously ill and severely wounded — for repatriation;
convicted military personnel, prisoners of war who have been held the longest, and illegally detained civilians of Ukraine.
Earlier, The Times reported that Russian troops systematically execute Ukrainian prisoners of war, and the occupying forces command even encourages soldiers to commit such crimes.
This step by Turkey may become an important stage in the return of Ukrainian prisoners of war home, as efforts to exchange information and document flow may allow families to obtain more information about their loved ones. The situation with prisoners of war remains difficult, and international support in such matters is of great importance.
