Ukraine's Security Service Strikes Deep Inside Russia

According to TSN.ua: Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has escalated its campaign of long-range strikes against Russian territory, employing drones with unprecedented range. Three recent deep-strike operations successfully destroyed critical infrastructure targets within Russia. These strikes represent a significant strategic shift, demonstrating Ukraine's growing capacity to project force far beyond its borders.

  • A key target was an oil refinery in Ukhta, which was struck from a distance of 1,700 kilometers (over 1,050 miles) from Ukrainian territory.
  • The SBU also hit a chemical plant in the Perm region, located 1,600 km from the Ukrainian border. This facility was reportedly a key supplier to Russia's military-industrial complex, involved in the production of explosives.
  • In the Pskov region, SBU drones attacked a major oil depot.

SBU Head Yevhenii Khmyra stated that the objective of these actions extends beyond the physical destruction of assets. As commentator Oleksandr Chernenko noted, quoting Khmyra's strategy,

"The goal is not only the physical destruction of objects, but also the constant forcing of Russia to expend resources on defending its deep rear."
Chernenko further observed,
"It is noteworthy that the Service has reached this new level of strike intensity under the leadership of Yevhenii Khmyra."

These operations by the SBU signal a clear evolution in Ukraine's approach to the conflict, marking an increased focus on degrading Russian military logistics and industrial capacity.

The Evolution of Ukraine's War Strategy

The increasing scale and depth of SBU attacks inside Russia point to a significant evolution in Ukraine's wartime tactics. This may signal a new phase of the conflict, where Ukraine seeks to weaken the enemy's military potential by striking critical infrastructure far from the front lines. Such actions are also designed to impact Russian military morale and force a costly reallocation of defensive resources, potentially diverting them from primary combat operations. This strategic depth adds a complex layer to the ongoing war of attrition.
