Ukrainian Security Service Arrests Russian FSB Agent Who Mapped Defense Positions on Google.
Suspect Detained for Alleged Collaboration with Russia’s FSB
According to Espreso.tv: Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has arrested a man suspected of working with Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) and gathering intelligence on Ukraine’s Defense Forces. The detention was carried out on charges of treason and desertion. The suspect drew attention by posting pro-Kremlin comments in Telegram channels, which prompted an investigation by law enforcement.
An FSB officer recruited the man, who then began collecting data on the locations of Ukrainian military units. He relayed details to his handler and marked potential targets on Google Maps. Authorities apprehended him at his home, seizing two mobile phones during a search.
Legal Consequences and Broader Operations
According to the SBU, the suspect has been formally charged under Article 111, Part 2, and Article 408, Part 1 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code. He is currently in custody without the possibility of bail. If convicted, he faces life imprisonment and confiscation of property. This arrest is part of a broader security crackdown:
- On June 16, another FSB agent was detained in the Donetsk region;
- On June 22, the SBU and National Police thwarted a planned terrorist attack in central Kyiv.
The detention of this alleged FSB collaborator reflects the ongoing efforts of Ukrainian authorities to identify and neutralize individuals who pose a threat to national security. Such operations underscore the SBU’s systematic approach to countering espionage and terrorism, a critical task amid Russia’s continued aggression. These actions help safeguard military and civilian infrastructure from potential attacks, contributing to Ukraine’s overall security and stability.
