Counterintelligence Operation in Rivne

According to Novyny.live: Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has detained a Russian national in the city of Rivne. The individual was acting on behalf of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), gathering intelligence on Ukrainian Special Operations Forces personnel. He faces up to 15 years in prison with property confiscation. The operation was conducted by the SBU's military counterintelligence unit in coordination with the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This arrest highlights the persistent threat of Russian espionage within Ukraine's borders, even far from the front lines.

The detainee is a 28-year-old Russian citizen who served as an intelligence officer for Russian military intelligence from 2018 to 2019. In 2021, he arrived in Rivne posing as an ordinary resident from Russia's Krasnoyarsk Krai, a cover that facilitated his covert activities. His objective was to collect personal data on members of Ukraine's Special Operations Forces.

Evidence and Official Response

A search of the suspect's residence uncovered Russian military uniforms and official Russian documents, confirming his ties to Russian intelligence services. The SBU's military counterintelligence unit meticulously documented his subversive activities and apprehended him in the final stages of the operation. He has been formally charged with espionage and is being held in custody without the possibility of bail.

The Security Service of Ukraine emphasized the significance of this operation, stating: 'In cooperation with the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the SBU's military counterintelligence has prevented new attempts by the FSB to infiltrate agents into the defense forces of our state.'

This incident underscores the ongoing threats posed by Russian aggression and the activity of foreign intelligence services on Ukrainian soil.

The arrest in Rivne represents a critical success in Ukraine's efforts to safeguard national security amid the continuing Russian invasion. The SBU's actions demonstrate an active and effective campaign against foreign agents seeking to undermine the country's defense capabilities. This case serves as a stark warning to other potential operatives about the serious countermeasures employed by Ukrainian security agencies to protect state interests.
