Scandal in the retirement community in New York

Dispute between neighbors

Kathleen Schuman shot 67-year-old Richard Cutrone while he was walking his dog. Witnesses say it happened against the backdrop of a long-standing conflict between the neighbors.

“My first reaction was to take the gun, and I knocked it out of her hands. I wanted to protect my dog and myself,” Cutrone said.

“Kathleen showed no emotions. She claimed that I was the devil and had tried to kill her. She said: 'I'm sorry I missed, I'm sorry I missed.'”

The police arrested Schuman shortly after the incident. Near the scene, there were blood traces of Cutrone when journalists arrived.

The woman is charged with second-degree assault, but the reasons for her actions remain unclear.

Domestic disputes

Neighbors say that the relationship between the retirees had been complicated for several months, and the tension reached its peak.

“We are aware of the dispute that occurred last night between the two residents,” said Conifer LLC, the company managing Belmont Vistas.

Richard Cutrone, after receiving treatment at the hospital, expects a full recovery. Kathleen Schuman also received medical assistance for minor injuries. The court issued a ruling prohibiting her from approaching the neighbor.

Neighbors believe that the roots of the conflict lie in issues related to pets — Cutrone has a dog, and Schuman has a cat. The tension escalated a few days ago.

“I just asked her if she could keep her cat indoors, and that's where it all started,” Cutrone added.

Community management emphasized that violence is not characteristic of their community and that this is a case that should not be considered typical.

Cutrone, still shocked, admits that he could not imagine that something like this could happen in a peaceful environment for the elderly.

“I lived in Manhattan, San Francisco, Boston, and nothing like this has ever happened to me,” he stated.
