Iran’s Strait of Hormuz Tactics Draw Comparison to Russia’s Black Sea Blockade by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister.
Statement from Ukraine’s Top Diplomat
According to UATV: Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has drawn a parallel between Iran’s efforts to restrict shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and Russia’s aggressive actions in the Black Sea. He stressed the need for coordinated international action to restore freedom of navigation, pointing out that Ukraine—whose maritime trade was blocked by Russia in 2022—possesses rare firsthand experience in confronting such threats.
Why Ukraine’s Expertise Matters
Sybiha noted that Ukraine managed to reopen its sea lanes through its own efforts. He stated:
“This is yet another area where Ukraine has unique experience, knowledge, and technological advantages that no other country possesses.” — Andrii Sybiha
His remarks highlight Ukraine’s confidence in its ability to counter maritime aggression.
The minister also emphasized that, as a nation that has endured similar acts of intimidation, Ukraine insists on upholding the core principles of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Kyiv is actively backing international initiatives to unblock the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring the need for global coordination to protect vital sea routes.
Sybiha’s comments not only reflect Ukraine’s stance on maritime security but also its commitment to global cooperation in tackling challenges linked to aggression at sea. By comparing Iran’s conduct to Russia’s, he underscores the urgency of safeguarding maritime corridors amid today’s geopolitical tensions. Ukraine’s experience in this domain could serve as a valuable asset in shaping a worldwide strategy for maritime safety.
