EU Urged to Sanction Rosatom and Roscosmos: Ukraine's Foreign Minister Makes His Case.
Push for Tougher Russia Sanctions
According to UATV: During a meeting of the EU Council in Brussels, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called for sanctions against Russian entities including Rosatom, Roscosmos, and Gazprombank. The appeal came as discussions progressed on the EU's 21st sanctions package, which Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas noted is not yet ready for final approval. This latest push reflects Ukraine's ongoing efforts to tighten economic pressure on Moscow.
Sybiha specifically urged the EU to ban vehicles involved in transporting natural gas from Russia. He also argued against allowing Russian athletes to compete in international events, stating,
“Russia has not stopped its aggression. Russia has not withdrawn its troops from Ukraine. Russia has not returned to complying with international law. Why should its isolation weaken?”- Andrii Sybiha.
Ukraine's Stance and EU Support
Kyiv's position on imposing new economic restrictions remains firm, with Ukrainian officials hoping EU member states will back these initiatives. The call for additional sanctions underscores the persistent tensions between Ukraine and Russia, as well as Ukraine's drive to secure continued international backing in its standoff with the aggressor. Meanwhile, the ongoing EU debate over new sanctions shows that economic measures against Russia stay high on the agenda, even as their implementation may face political and economic hurdles among member nations.
