Russia's Military Objectives for 2025

According to TSN.ua: Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, has detailed Russia's military plans for 2025 and the reasons for its battlefield setbacks in the Donbas and other regions. According to Syrskyi, the Kremlin's goals include seizing the entirety of the Donbas, as well as territories in the Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kherson oblasts. Additionally, Russian forces aim to establish a buffer zone in the Kharkiv and Sumy oblasts.

Ukrainian Armed Forces' Counter-Operations

In March-April 2025, the Ukrainian Armed Forces conducted offensive operations in Russia's Belgorod Oblast, followed by operations in Kursk Oblast in May-June 2025. In August 2025, Russian forces launched an offensive along the Dobropillia axis. Oleksandr Syrskyi stated:

“To thwart their plans, we launched a counteroffensive along the Dobropillia axis.” — Oleksandr Syrskyi

These actions were a direct response to Russian attempts to expand their control over Ukrainian territory.

A key development was the encirclement of the Russian 51st Army by the Ukrainian counteroffensive. The situation in Kupiansk is currently stable, with 97% of the city under Ukrainian control. Oleksandr Syrskyi confirmed:

“Despite claims by General Gerasimov and Putin himself, 97% of Kupiansk is currently under the control of Ukrainian troops.” — Oleksandr Syrskyi

Meanwhile, the situation in Pokrovsk remains difficult, but the city has not fallen.

It is also notable that last year, the Russian occupation army planned to create 14 new divisions. However, they succeeded in implementing these plans by no more than half. These facts underscore the difficulties the Russian military faces in its attempts to expand control over Ukrainian territory. The ongoing conflict highlights the significant challenges Russia has encountered in achieving its strategic objectives, despite its initial advantages in scale and resources.

Military actions in eastern Ukraine continue to be a focal point for the international community. Despite the Kremlin's ambitious plans, Ukrainian forces demonstrate resilience and a readiness to repel attacks. Recent events indicate the frontline situation remains dynamic, and the results of the Ukrainian counteroffensive could significantly influence the future course of the conflict and the strategies of both sides. Both nations are likely to seek new methods to achieve their goals amid escalating regional tensions.
