How many people died in Mariupol: Zelensky named the figures.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the number of dead in Mariupol during the Russian invasion could be very high. He emphasized this in an interview with Italian journalist Cecilia Sali.
Zelensky noted that to this day, the exact number of dead has not been established as investigations are ongoing. However, there are some unofficial data regarding 20,000 deaths.
The president explained that many people were injured and died under the rubble during the storming of Mariupol. Russian occupiers are trying to destroy evidence of their crimes and bury the dead. He even compared this situation to the destruction of Grozny in Chechnya.
Zelensky also pointed out that it is unknown how many people, including children, have been taken out of Mariupol by the Russians. Some of them have already returned, but there are no exact figures yet. Many civilians who went out to protest against the occupation may have been killed or subjected to torture.
