Court Convicts Man for Marriage Scheme Aimed at Fleeing Ukraine

According to TSN.ua: A man from Zaporizhzhia region has been convicted for devising a plan to escape abroad by formally marrying his wife's disabled daughter. The Zhovkva District Court in Lviv Oblast delivered the verdict after the man married the woman, who has a Group II disability, via the 'Diia' mobile app on December 12, 2025, intending to use this marriage as grounds to leave the country. This case highlights ongoing attempts to exploit legal loopholes in Ukraine's emigration procedures.

Border guards at the 'Rava-Ruska' checkpoint in Lviv Oblast grew suspicious of the atypical family relationship and detained the man on January 17, 2026. Following an investigation, the court found him guilty under Part 1 of Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which concerns the illegal crossing of the state border.

Court Sentence and Implications

The court sentenced the man to three years in prison but suspended the sentence, imposing a one-year probationary period instead. This incident underscores a troubling pattern of individuals attempting to use family ties to circumvent Ukraine's laws on leaving the country, particularly in the context of wartime travel restrictions.

The case reflects broader concerns among law enforcement about the abuse of familial relationships within migration law. Ukraine maintains various restrictions on individuals attempting to leave to avoid military conscription or other legal obligations, making such schemes a focus for increased border control scrutiny.

This ruling also points to the need for refining legal frameworks to prevent similar fraudulent attempts to cross the border in the future.
