Deadly Heatwave Grips Europe: France Closes Schools as Temperatures Soar to 43°C.
Record-Breaking Heat Across France and Europe
According to Espreso.tv: France and several other European nations are enduring a severe heatwave that has already caused fatalities and forced widespread school closures. In the suburbs of Bordeaux, three elderly individuals—a woman and two men aged between 80 and 95—have died. France's national weather service forecasts temperatures reaching 43°C in the Bordeaux region and up to 39°C in Paris. In response, Meteo-France has issued a 'red' danger alert for 49 of the country's 96 administrative departments.
Approximately 845 schools across France have been shut down entirely, while another 1,800 educational institutions dismissed students early due to the oppressive heat. Over the weekend of June 20–21, authorities recovered 13 bodies from the water, including a teenager. For context, a similar heatwave in August 2003 claimed roughly 15,000 lives in France, underscoring the serious threat posed by such extreme weather events.
Heatwave's Toll on Neighboring Countries
The scorching conditions are not confined to France. In Belgium, meteorologists warn of potential record-breaking temperatures, while Spain has issued alerts for 'extremely high' readings up to 44°C. Germany's Berlin Open tennis tournament was temporarily suspended due to the heat and thunderstorms. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has declared a yellow-level heat warning from June 22 to 25. These developments highlight the far-reaching impact of the heatwave on daily life across multiple European nations.
This extreme weather episode is part of a broader global trend linked to climate change. Beyond the immediate danger to human life, such high temperatures can strain infrastructure and disrupt economies. Experts warn that similar events may become more frequent, emphasizing the urgent need for adaptation strategies to cope with shifting climatic conditions.
