Zelensky: Without Reparations from Russian Assets, Diplomacy Will End.
According to ТСН: The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that without funding from reparations derived from frozen Russian assets in the EU, Russia will abandon diplomatic efforts to end the war. He stated this during a press conference.
Zelensky stressed that the lack of such financial support will make Ukraine more vulnerable, which could be exploited by the Kremlin.
“He understands that we will be weaker and more vulnerable. And it is absolutely clear that he definitely will not want a diplomatic track. Definitely not want any diplomacy, any dialogue,” Zelensky said.
The Critical Importance of Reparations
The President pointed out that the reparations loan from frozen Russian assets is extremely important for deterring aggression. Without this resource, the Russian leader may perceive the situation as an opportunity to continue military actions.
“What will all the others do?” added the head of state, commenting on the possible consequences of such a scenario.
Statements from European Leaders
Earlier, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the need for a decision on long-term funding for Ukraine at the European Council summit. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz noted that using frozen Russian assets is a key step towards ending the war. According to him, this involves an amount of up to 90 billion euros, which can significantly support the Ukrainian army over a prolonged period.
At the same time, China sharply reacted to the EU's ideas regarding the use of Russian assets, stating that such actions could complicate the international situation. The PRC also stressed its position against unilateral sanctions imposed without a decision from the UN Security Council.
Thus, the issue of utilizing frozen assets remains at the center of international attention. It is important for countries supporting Ukraine to find a way to ensure the financial stability necessary to counter Russian aggression. The further course of events in the region and Ukraine's security depend on the decisions and actions of international partners.
