Folk Signs for Travelers: What Is Absolutely Prohibited Before a Journey.
According to ТСН: When planning a trip, the first thing that comes to mind is documents, suitcases, and route. However, since ancient times, people have believed that a successful journey depends not only on preparation but also on following certain rules. These folk signs have developed over centuries and have been passed down from generation to generation to protect against potential troubles. Even those who approach this skeptically sometimes adhere to these prohibitions just in case, so they should not be ignored.
What Should Not Be Done Before Leaving for a Journey
Do not turn back once you step outside. This is one of the most well-known signs — not to turn back after leaving. It is believed that turning back 'breaks the road' and can lead to delays or disruptions in plans. If returning is necessary, it is advised to sit down for a few seconds or look in a mirror to neutralize the negative.
Do not sweep or wash the floor. Cleaning just before departure is considered a bad omen. Our ancestors believed that this could 'sweep away' good fortune and ensure a safe return. It is better to tidy up a day before the trip.
Do not take out the trash. According to folk beliefs, taking out the trash before a trip symbolically takes away the good energy of the home. This is particularly true for long or important journeys.
Do not sew or repair clothes on yourself. It was thought that sewing or mending clothes that are already worn is a bad sign. Signs link this with 'sewing up the way' or difficulties on the road. It is better to take care of clothes in advance.
Do not sit on the edge of the table. Before departure, it is not recommended to sit on the edge of the table or eat standing up. It is believed that this can lead to instability in plans and unexpected route changes.
Do not argue before leaving. Negative emotions before a journey are considered a bad omen. Quarrels and yelling supposedly attract unpleasant events on the road; thus, our ancestors advised to depart in a calm mood.
A Small Ritual for a Happy Journey
One of the most common traditions is to sit for a minute before leaving. It was believed that this helps gather thoughts, remember important things, and 'deceive' evil spirits that may interfere on the road. This simple ritual truly helps to calm down.
Adhering to these signs can become a kind of personal ritual for those embarking on a journey, adding confidence along the new path. Although not everyone believes in such superstitions, following them can become a pleasant tradition for travelers, as a journey should not only be a challenge of new experiences but also a pleasant one.
