Record Radiation Spike on Mars Detected During May 2024 Solar Storm.
The May 2024 Solar Storm
According to TSN.ua: In May 2024, a massive solar storm struck both Earth and Mars, triggering unprecedented atmospheric changes on the Red Planet. Classified as one of the most intense solar events in the last twenty years, this storm's impact was confirmed by data from European Space Agency orbiters, including Mars Express and the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter.
On Earth, the storm was so powerful that auroras were visible as far south as Mexico, highlighting the event's sheer strength. The situation on Mars was even more extreme. Over a 64-hour period, the planet absorbed a radiation dose equivalent to 200 days of normal exposure. Electron concentrations jumped by 45% at an altitude of 110 km and soared by 278% at 130 km, signaling major atmospheric disruptions that could have lasting implications for future exploration of the Red Planet.
A Scientific Challenge
The superstorm originated from sunspot AR3664, which unleashed an X2.9-class flare and a coronal mass ejection. The resulting atmospheric response was exceptionally intense.
“These events not only underscore the Sun's activity but also present new challenges for space research, as well as for the safety of spacecraft and future missions to Mars.” – Jacob Parrott
As a result, the May 2024 storm serves as a critical wake-up call for scientists studying both Earth and Mars. It opens up fresh avenues for investigating cosmic phenomena and their effects on the planets within our solar system.
This event highlights the necessity of tracking solar activity to protect space missions and technology. With plans for Mars colonization moving forward, understanding how solar storms alter the atmosphere and radiation environment of the Red Planet will become essential for the success of future expeditions. Researchers will need to factor these conditions into the design of new technologies and strategies for exploring Mars.
