Up to 12 Years in Prison Sought for Three Russian Soldiers in 'Sapphire' Case as Trial Begins.
Investigation into the Detention of the 'Sapphire' Crew
According to Novyny.live: Three Russian servicemen face a court trial after Odesa investigators completed their probe into the illegal seizure of a Ukrainian rescue vessel's crew. The ship, named 'Sapphire,' was on a humanitarian mission near Snake Island when the incident occurred. The criminal case files have now been submitted to the judiciary.
Case Details
Evidence shows the detainees were held under inhumane conditions. In February 2022, a vice-admiral of Russia's Black Sea Fleet ordered the capture of the 'Sapphire' crew, which included 21 people on board—among them a doctor and clergy members. The captives were deprived of adequate food and water, endangering their lives and health. They were finally released in March 2022 during a prisoner exchange.
Law enforcement has charged the three soldiers in absentia with cruel treatment of civilians. They now face up to 12 years in prison. The 'Sapphire' had set sail for Snake Island in February 2022, carrying 17 crew members and four civilians. The island came under attack on February 24, 2022, and by March 1, 2022, most of the military personnel stationed there had been identified. Those soldiers were returned to Ukraine on March 24, 2022.
This case highlights grave human rights violations during armed conflict. The treatment of the 'Sapphire' crew underscores ongoing concerns about adherence to international laws protecting civilians in war zones. Continued efforts to prosecute such crimes may strengthen accountability and justice, while raising awareness about the critical need to safeguard non-combatants in military operations.
