The USA is preparing a new military aid package for Ukraine - Media.
The administration of US President Joe Biden is preparing a military aid package for Ukraine worth 725 million dollars. This package is one of the largest provided under presidential authorities for arms reduction (PDA). This was reported by RBC-Ukraine citing Reuters.
The aid is part of efforts to support Ukraine before Biden's term ends, occurring against the backdrop of escalating Russian aggression.
The package will include anti-tank weapons, anti-personnel mines, drones, and Stinger missiles, as well as ammunition for HIMARS, including cluster munitions used in GMLRS rockets.
The size of the package significantly exceeds previous ones, which typically ranged from 125 to 250 million dollars. This will be one of the last significant military aids from the Biden administration before the inauguration of new President Donald Trump on January 20, 2025.
Congress will receive an official notification about the package in the coming days. The final content and size of the aid may be changed before Biden signs it.
Although anti-personnel mines are banned by international treaties, Ukraine insists on their supply to defend its territory. The US expects their use to be limited to military zones and to avoid civilian areas.
The situation on the battlefield has escalated, and Ukraine needs additional defense resources as soon as possible. According to analysts, Russia is making its fastest advance since the invasion.
Additional Allocated Funds
In addition, Biden has another 4-5 billion dollars in PDA approved by Congress that can be used before the power transfer. This means that part of the aid will remain at the discretion of the new administration.
Providing such assistance demonstrates strategic support for Ukraine from the US, regardless of political changes in Washington. This will help strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities at a critical moment in the war. However, the use of landmine weapons raises discussions due to risks to the civilian population and ethical aspects.
