Stadler’s Eco-Friendly Locomotive

According to Novyny.live: Swiss manufacturer Stadler, in partnership with Sardinian regional operator ARST, has unveiled what it calls the world’s first hydrogen-powered train built specifically for narrow-gauge tracks. This innovation is expected to significantly cut CO₂ emissions, marking a major milestone in reducing the environmental impact of rail transport. Projections indicate that deploying this hydrogen train will lower emissions by more than 2,100 metric tons of CO₂ annually.

New Technology and Deployment

Scheduled to enter service in 2028, the train will operate on the route connecting Alghero Airport with the suburb of Mamuntanas. This development represents a notable achievement for sustainable transport in Sardinia and across Italy. Beyond ARST, two other Italian operators have also committed to adopting hydrogen trains built by Stadler.

Stadler is constructing two trains for Ferrovia Circumetnea and nine for Ferrovie della Calabria. The project highlights a growing shift toward clean technologies in the railway sector and a concerted effort to lower greenhouse gas emissions. The introduction of hydrogen-powered trains is a critical step forward in advancing sustainability and environmental stewardship.
