How Reservation Can Save Students Who Lose Their Deferment During Academic Leave.
Academic Leave and Military Mobilization
According to Novyny.live: When students take a leave of absence from their studies, they automatically forfeit their right to a draft deferment. However, they may still qualify for a reservation (brońuvannia) — but only after their academic leave status is recorded in the Unified State Electronic Database on Education (EDEBO). In Ukraine, there are two main ways to avoid conscription: obtaining a workplace reservation or securing a study-related deferment. The key issue is that the deferment ceases immediately once the academic leave begins.
A reservation is only possible if the information about the academic leave has been entered into EDEBO. Students must also be aware that dismissal from the institution also cancels the deferment, and re-enrolling does not restore it. These legal nuances can significantly affect a student’s ability to avoid mobilization.
Yurii Aivazian explains: 'If the academic leave starts on October 1, 2026, the most realistic scenario is that the study deferment will disappear after that date — once the educational institution updates or enters the academic leave status in EDEBO and that data syncs with the military registry. This may not happen immediately on the day of the order or even right after the database entry.'
The Importance of Timely Data Updates
Students planning an academic leave must understand not only the legal consequences but also how changes in their enrollment status can affect their ability to avoid conscription. During wartime, it is crucial for young people to be fully aware of all legal aspects related to the draft and to respond promptly to any changes in their academic standing.
Proper communication with educational institutions and keeping EDEBO records up to date can be decisive factors in preserving reservation rights during mobilization.
