Formation of Ukraine's National Guard 'Azov' 1st Corps

According to TSN.ua: In a significant military reorganization, Ukraine's National Guard established its 'Azov' 1st Corps in the spring of 2025. This new corps integrates several experienced combat brigades under a unified command, enhancing operational coordination. The constituent brigades include:

  • 1st Presidential Operational Purpose Brigade "Bureviy" (Hurricane)
  • 12th Special Purpose Brigade "Azov"
  • 14th Operational Purpose Brigade "Chervona Kalyna" (Red Viburnum)
  • 15th Operational Purpose Brigade "Kara-Dag"
  • 20th Operational Purpose Brigade "Liubart"

Additionally, a new special-purpose detachment named "Tuman" (Fog), composed of veteran snipers, began operating within the corps structure.

Honoring Service Members

On January 29, the President of Ukraine honored service members from units of the 1st Corps. This restructuring is part of Ukraine's ongoing effort to streamline and strengthen its defensive forces. Among those decorated was Sergeant Viktor "Simba" Hrebin, who received the "Cross of Military Merit." Major Vasyl Polahniuk, who was killed in the line of duty, was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine.

The "Tuman" detachment undertakes a broader range of missions than traditional sniper units, highlighting the adaptation of modern military formations to evolving frontline challenges. The creation of the 'Azov' 1st Corps represents a major step in developing Ukraine's defense capabilities and improving the command structure for its military formations.

This consolidation reflects Ukraine's strategic approach to bolstering its military capacity amid ongoing security threats. By uniting battle-hardened units, the corps aims to respond more effectively to threats and raise the overall proficiency of Ukrainian forces. The recognition of service members underscores the importance of acknowledging their contributions and maintaining morale during wartime.
