Switzerland Pledges $12.5 Million to Rebuild Six Ukrainian Regions.
Community Recovery Initiative in Ukraine
According to UATV: The Swiss government, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has launched a $12.5 million project aimed at rebuilding war-torn communities across Ukraine. This initiative targets six regions that have suffered extensive damage during the conflict:
- Kherson
- Dnipropetrovsk
- Zaporizhzhia
- Sumy
- Kharkiv
- Chernihiv
The program is scheduled to be implemented over a two-year period, focusing on restoring essential infrastructure and services.
Current Situation in Vysokopillya
Vysokopillya, a settlement in the Kherson region, stands as a stark example of the war's devastation. Occupied by Russian forces in March 2022 and liberated in September of the same year, the town has seen approximately 80% of its infrastructure destroyed. This widespread damage has made it extremely difficult for residents to return and resume normal life.
Local official Kostyantyn Starodumov noted: 'About 50% of our population left. In some areas, people are coming back. We are building and repairing schools, restoring hospitals. We are creating all the conditions to encourage people to return.'
These efforts highlight the active role local authorities are playing in making their communities livable again.
Auke Lootsma from UNDP emphasized the complexity of the work ahead: 'This territory was under occupation and has suffered massive destruction—private homes, administrative buildings, and commercial properties alike. We are focused on improving the quality of life for those who will return.' This reflects a comprehensive recovery strategy that goes beyond mere reconstruction.
Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson Regional Education Department, stressed the importance of education in the rebuilding process: 'The children studying here today will be the ones rebuilding tomorrow. We are planning the future of the Kherson region with them in mind.' His remarks underline the role of schools in preparing the next generation for the region's renewal.
Swiss representative Jean-Luc Bernasconi reaffirmed his country's commitment: 'Switzerland remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine's recovery. We are proud to help local communities build their own future and drive their own development.'
This statement underscores the enduring international backing for Ukraine's recovery, particularly in restoring shattered communities.
In summary, the $12.5 million project represents a significant step toward rebuilding Ukrainian communities affected by the war and facilitating the return of displaced residents. The initiative is part of a broader international strategy to support Ukraine's post-war recovery, which is critical for stabilizing the region and reviving its social and economic fabric. Rebuilding homes, schools, and hospitals not only improves living conditions but also lays the groundwork for long-term economic growth in these areas.
