Michel called for reform of the UN Security Council and the renunciation of the veto.
President of the European Council Charles Michel called for the reform of the UN Security Council. He believes that the Security Council has lost its representativeness and legitimacy and is in need of decisive changes. One of the steps towards reform is the renunciation of the veto power, which hinders the effective work of the Council.
Michel stated this during his speech at the General Assembly of the United Nations. He noted that the UN Charter was adopted in 1945, but since then the world has undergone many dangerous conflicts and needs new tools to resolve them. However, no changes have been made to the UN Charter.
The President of the European Council proposes to reform the Security Council and make it more inclusive. He believes that Africa and Latin America should have permanent seats on the Security Council, and regional organizations should play a more active role in decision-making at the UN.
"We need common laws that will be respected by everyone. In this context, the Security Council must get rid of (the right – ed.) veto, which paralyzes it. It is currently not representative, not legitimate, and it is ineffective and increasingly deadlocked," Michel said.
