Portugal Tops the Ranking of Best European Countries for Drinking Holidays: Details.
Portugal — The Best Place for Drinking
According to The Sun: Many travelers love to enjoy a great vacation, and one of the European destinations has been crowned the best for fun holidays.
According to
The Telegraph, Portugal has become the best place for drinking, as the country not only ranks among those with the highest wine consumption per capita in the world but also offers some of the cheapest prices.Alamy
By analyzing statistics such as annual alcohol consumption, beer prices in the capital, and the number of bars per capita, Portugal took first place.
The country holds second place for wine consumption — 52.3 liters per person.
Article author Lauren Clark, who moved to Lisbon, noted that you can get a glass of wine
“at the price of coffee in the UK”.
Why Wine is So Cheap
The availability of wine is due to Portugal being covered with vineyards — there are about 4700 of them.
The country is known for producing its port wine in the Douro Valley, which is a sweet wine typically served with desserts and has a high alcohol content (19-22%).
Lisbon is famous for its pricing on alcohol. According to HikersBay, Portuguese beer in the city costs €3 (£2.61), and a bottle of wine on the table can cost only €5.50 (£4.78).
If you visit McDonald’s, you can order a can of Sagres beer for just over €2 (£1.74).
This year, Drinks Merchants recognized Portugal as the cheapest place to buy a bottle of wine.
AlamyExperience and Attractions
The average price of a bottle of wine in Portugal is only £3.91, with the cheapest options at £2.53, while in the UK, the average price of a bottle of wine is £9.36.
In supermarkets, you can often find bottles of wine priced below €5 (£4.35), including brands like Esteva, Evel, and Porca de Murça.
Across the country, attractions dedicated to the history of alcohol production can be found. For example, the World of Wine museum in Porto offers free tastings.
The establishment features seven museums, 12 restaurants, a bar, and a cafe, a wine school, and shops.
In the seven thematic museums of the Wine Experience, visitors embark on
“an extraordinary journey from grape to bottle”.
Nightlife and Unique Bars
A few years ago, Lisbon was recognized as the best 'temporary city' in Europe due to its large number of bars and pubs.
PENSÃO AMOROne of the most iconic bars is “Bar A Parodia,” one of the oldest cocktail bars in Lisbon, described by visitors as
“a true gem”.
Another unique establishment known for its live shows and events was formerly a brothel. This is Pensão Amor, located on the waterfront of Lisbon, dating back to the 18th century.
The bar is decorated with vintage burlesque posters, and guests can enjoy drinks on velvet sofas.
Affordable Prices in Other Cities
Portuguese pubs and restaurants outside the main tourist destinations, such as Lisbon, Porto, and Algarve, are usually cheaper.
For example, Silves, the former capital of Algarve, was recognized last year as the most affordable city in Portugal: the average hotel price is about £73, and beer costs only £2.50.
Flights from the UK typically cost less than £50, and the city is known for its cobbled streets, cafes, and independent shops selling handmade goods and ceramics.
In autumn, the weather in Portugal remains dry and mild, with temperatures in October ranging between 15°C and 23°C.
AlamyFor travelers planning a trip,
“Sun Travel”found that returns from Lisbon can be found for prices starting at £38 in October. Flight duration is 2 hours and 50 minutes.
If you head to Porto, then the air time is even shorter — just 2 hours and 20 minutes from direct flights from Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, London, and Edinburgh.
Thus, Portugal offers not only wonderful conditions for holidaying with affordable wine prices, but also cultural attractions that draw tourists from all over the world. Whether you are staying in big cities or traveling through lesser-known places, you will be able to enjoy delicious food and wines that offer the unique taste of Portuguese culture.
