According to The Sun: Thousands of Britons still using burgundy passports have encountered confusing rules while traveling.
Since March 2020, anyone renewing their passports receives a new blue version instead of the burgundy.
Along with the new color of the passport, stricter rules apply to Britons following the EU exit.
Even after the five-year grace period of these rules, many travelers still find themselves in trouble.
Previously, rules allowed holders of British passports to use 10 months from their previous passports.
This meant they could have a validity of up to 10 years and 10 months.
However, the current rules no longer recognize those additional 10 months as valid, even if they are noted in your passport.
For example, if your passport was issued in June 2015 and the expiration date is September 2025, that expiration date is actually incorrect.
Instead, your passport would have already expired 10 years from the issuance date – making the true expiration date June 2025.
Most airlines cannot accept passports showing more than 10 years of age when looking at the start date.
A few countries require British travelers to have additional months before their passport expiration for travel.
For example, most places in Europe, including Spain and France, require at least three months before the passport expires.
However, the confusion arises from the fact that both of these rules are in effect simultaneously.
While they do not need to operate simultaneously, most airlines and tour operators require passports to comply with both new rules.
This is despite the UK Foreign Office website stating: 'The expiration date must not be within 10 years of the date of issue.'
Nevertheless, many families still find themselves having to adhere to both of these rules, so it is worth ensuring that your passport meets both requirements.
Earlier this year, one British woman was denied boarding on her flight at London's Heathrow due to the confusing passport rules.
Attempting to board her flight in the summer of 2025, her passport had a date of issue of June 2015 and an expiration date of August 2025.
Airline staff misinformed her, saying she needed to comply with both rules, so she was denied her flight and lost £700.
Last year, passenger Alex Brook broke down in tears when he also faced this issue.
Trying to travel in May 2024, he said: 'Because my passport was issued in April 2014; it meant it was issued 10 years and 1 month ago.'
A mother traveling to Paris in June was wrongly informed that her passport had expired due to a similar misunderstanding, and she was denied boarding her flight.
The confusion surrounding passport use rules is causing problems for British travelers, and many of them are forced to adhere to stricter passport validity requirements during their travels.
