Why a Ukrainian Delegation's US Visit Won't Deliver a Breakthrough as Trump Delays Action
According to TSN.ua: A visit by a Ukrainian delegation to the United States is unlikely to produce major shifts in resolving the Ukraine issue, as US President Donald Trump has declined to treat it with urgency. Instead, Trump's focus has been on other global regions, particularly negotiations with China, a move experts say could shape future US policy toward Ukraine. This reflects a broader pattern where the Trump administration, facing multiple international challenges, has not prioritized the conflict in Ukraine.
Ukrainian Ambassador to the US Olga Stefanyshyna held a series of meetings with key figures, including:
- Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers
- Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz
Despite these engagements, Vadym Denysenko notes that Trump currently sees no imperative to end the war in Ukraine, as a prolonged conflict serves to weaken Russia. However, Denysenko emphasized that the political calculus ahead of the US elections could compel Trump to revisit the Ukrainian issue within the coming weeks.
On January 17, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the start of the delegation's work in the US. Notably, the delegation also scheduled meetings with influential individuals such as:
- Jared Kushner
- Witkoff
- Drixoll
These meetings could prove significant for shaping the policy agenda, even though immediate changes in US-Ukraine relations are not anticipated. The delegation's efforts highlight Kyiv's attempt to maintain dialogue and influence US policy from a proactive stance amid uncertainty.
The situation surrounding Ukraine in US policy remains complex. The Trump administration's lack of urgency in resolving the conflict may affect Kyiv's strategies for engaging with Washington, especially with upcoming US elections that could alter American foreign policy priorities. This strategic delay underscores the challenging diplomatic landscape Ukraine navigates as it seeks sustained Western support.
